The Indian skipper Rohit Sharma led from the front in the must-win encounter in Mohali and smashed his third double-hundred in ODIs. He was in no mood to give his wicket away after the hiding India received at the hands of the visitors in Dharamsala. Team India posted a monumental total of 392/4 in their stipulated fifty overs and are almost certain now to level the series. However, Rohit opened the shackles in the 44th over in which he slammed Suranga Lakmal for four consecutive sixes in an over.

He started his innings carefully under the hazy conditions as the ball swung a little bit early on as well. But once he got set, he literally annihilated Sri Lankan bowlers who had no idea where to bowl him. The 30-year-old just decimated the bowling line-up of the visitors and blew them away in style. He notched up his 16th century in 115 deliveries only to open his arms and wreak havoc with the bat in their camp.

Mayhem in the 44th over

Lakmal suffered the most of his hitting as he launched an assault on him the 44th over of the innings. Shreyas Iyer took the single on the first ball of the over to roll over the strike to Rohit who had just completed his century. However, he rocketed the full toss wide of off-stump to deep mid-wicket for a huge maximum and the impact of that shot played on the minds of the bowler big time. He never recovered from the blow and went for three more back-to-back sixes.

It was also poor bowling as Lakmal didn’t try even a slower ball and was predictable with his length. Rohit continued in the same momentum right through and smashed his third double-century in ODI cricket. India, on the back of the swashbuckling knock, went onto post a huge total close to 400 runs. Shreyas Iyer and Shikhar Dhawan too played well and brought up their respective half-centuries.
