Back in 2014, when a young, inexperienced Indian team toured New Zealand, the hosts defeated them by a margin of 4-0 in the five-match ODI series. The third match of this series ended in a draw courtesy brilliant knocks from Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja. Mitchell McClenaghan, who was a part of the New Zealand ODI set-up then, reminisced the moment when he picked up the wicket of Rohit Sharma.

It was in the first ODI of that series where India won the toss and elected to field first. Kane Williamson, Ross Taylor, and Corey Anderson scored half-centuries in the match to take the home team’s total to 292/7 after 50 overs. Mohammad Shami’s four-wicket haul helped restrict the Kiwis to a score below 300. Yet, it was a difficult chase for India right in the first game on the tour.

I didn’t understand what you said

India’s newly discovered opening pair at that point in time, Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma opened the innings. However, the New Zealand opening bowlers Tim Southee and Mitchell McClenaghan made life difficult for Sharma. He occupied a majority of the strike in the first five overs of the innings and hardly put bat onto the ball.

After struggling for 22 deliveries, Sharma finally got a big shot out off a delivery the McClenaghan bowled. He hooked a short ball straight to the deep fine leg fielder which brought an end to his torturous stay where he scored only 3 runs off 23 balls. His Mumbai Indians teammate back then, Mitch celebrated his skippers’ wicket hard and also said a few words.

Now, five years later, McClenaghan decided to recall that incident and shared a photo on Instagram. To this, Rohit Sharma replied: “You got better of me there Mitch! Although really didn’t understand what you said.”

India went on to lose that game by 24 runs as they were bowled out for 268 runs. Kohli registered his 18th ODI century in that match, 12th in a chase and the first in a defeat while chasing. He piled up 123 runs in 111 balls back then.
