Former England captain Michael Vaughan feels Rohit Sharma has lost his touch with the bat in the IPL 2022 after being handed over the national side’s captaincy across all formats. Mumbai Indians, led by Sharma, have lost six back to back games in the tournament so far, and have failed to open their account yet.
MI is placed at the bottom of the points table. The team’s opener and skipper Rohit Sharma has failed with the bat this year and has managed to score just 114 runs in the six games played so far. His average has fallen down to 19.00 and as a result, more pressure is built up on him.
Vaughan feels that Sharma’s performance has seen a downfall ever since he was named India’s all-format captain. “Rohit Sharma is an issue. Since he got the Indian job has not really done that (demonstrating going upwards), he has done little bit of that (demonstrating going down). It would be a concern for me that Rohit has failed to use his India captaincy as a confidence boost for his game to go really up into the sky,” he said while speaking to Cricbuzz.
Not easy for MI to make a comeback now, feels Vaughan
There have been many instances where Mumbai started on a poor note, but managed to make it into the playoffs. In the year 2015, they lost the first four matches, and went on to win the championship. But Vaughan believes that it will not be that easy for MI to make a comeback this year.
“They’re just not thinking right. They’re just not getting anything right. They are trying, they are giving it everything. They are probably tinkering a little bit too much but I’m afraid Mumbai this year we generally always know that they are going to come back and they leave it late but I think they are leaving it a little bit too late this year,” he added.
Shedding light upon the problem in the team, the 47-year-old said that Mumbai let go off many good players this time, and to add to that, the senior and experienced players have failed to perform this season.
“I have always loved them but they are just going to have a tough year, a year where they are going to try and maybe find one or two players. I think in Dewald Brevis, they have got a player that they can pretty much bank on for many, many years. They did the deal with Jofra Archer, he is not going to be there this year but again that’s good business going forward,” Vaughan concluded.
