Rohit Sharma is good choice as a captain, his batting doesn't seem to be affected by captaincy: Aamer Sohail

Rohit Sharma was named India’s T20I skipper after Virat Kohli stepped down from the position post Team India’s dismal T20 World Cup 2021 campaign. Kohli was then sacked as ODI skipper by the Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) in December and he shockingly relinquished his Test captaincy a day after the series defeat against South Africa earlier this month as Rohit was then made India’s all-format captain.

While there were many experts who reckoned that the ‘Hitman’ is not fit enough to represent the Men In Blue across formats, former Pakistan captain Aamer Sohail has come forward and backed Rohit Sharma, and at the same time, he also mentioned that his batting does not seem to be affected due to captaincy.

“Rohit Sharma is a good choice as a captain. His batting doesn’t seem to get affected by captaincy. Of course, his experience as the Mumbai Indians skipper at the IPL (Indian Premier League) would help. IPL helps the new players get prepared and make them comfortable with the camera. But I believe the IPL performances should not be the criterion for selection to the Test team; it should be based only on First-Class cricket,” said Sohail as quoted by Sportstar.

Apart from leading the Mumbai Indians to five IPL triumphs, the dynamic opener had led the Indian team to a Nidhas Trophy tri-series win against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in March 2018 and had led India to their record seventh Asia Cup win later in the year. He was the stand-in captain on both occasions as regular skipper when Virat Kohli was rested.

The elegant batter had made himself unavailable for selection for the recently-concluded South Africa bilateral series due to an injury and will next be seen in action during the home limited-overs series against the West Indies starting February 6. The white-ball series will consist of three ODIs and as many T20Is. All the One Day games will be played at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium on February 6, 9, and, 11 while the T20I series will be played on 16, 18, and, 20 at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
