Former Indian cricketer Reetinder Singh Sodhi has praised the way Rohit Sharma has come about his game in Test cricket. He noted that in the upcoming series against England, Sharma’s form will be crucial with the bat along with Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli. He also said that when Sharma is on the song, then he is the best batter in the world.

Rohit Sharma had started his Test career with two back-to-back centuries against West Indies back in 2013. However, his career in the whites failed to bloom instantly after that as he couldn’t keep up with the expectations on a regular basis. However, since 2019, when he first opened the innings in Test cricket, his career has gone to a different level.

During the ICC World Test Championship 2019-21, Sharma’s form with the bat was instrumental in pushing India into the finals of the tournament. In the final, which was the first time Sharma opened the innings for India in England, he scored 34 and 30 in two innings, giving India a steady start on both occasions.

A lot here depends on Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Cheteshwar Pujara: Reetinder Sodhi

“A lot here depends on Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Cheteshwar Pujara – how these three batsmen catch form in the upcoming series. We all know that, in his elegance, Rohit Sharma is the best batsman in the world,” Sodhi said on India News. A lot has been expected of Sharma going into the five-match Test series against England as it will also be a part of the ICC World Test Championship 2021-23.

Sodhi noted that Sharma is a special player when he opens the innings as he has the ability to take the match away from the opposition. “He was definitely struggling in Test cricket if we talk about sometime back but now he has stamped his authority in Test cricket. He is a special player as an opener, when he plays he can take the match away from the opposition in a matter of moments,” he added.

Talking about Sharma’s Test numbers, he has played 39 Tests and scored 2679 runs at an average of 46.19. He has made seven centuries and 12 half-centuries and has scored runs with a strike rate of 57.9. His numbers at home are quite good but his numbers in overseas conditions definitely need an improvement.
