Gautam Gambhir, the former Indian cricketer, has zeroed in on Rohit Sharma as the best captain in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Back in 2013, Rohit replaced Ricky Ponting as the skipper of the Mumbai Indians (MI) and it worked wonders. In the same year, MI won their maiden IPL championship and from there on, Rohit and his team didn’t take a backward step.

In 2015, 2017 and 2019, Sharma and Co got their hands on the coveted trophy. In fact, with four titles to his name, Rohit is currently the most successful skipper in the T20 tournament. As per Gambhir, leadership is about how many trophies someone has won.

‘Rohit Sharma may finish at 6-7 maybe’

“I think it’s Rohit Sharma. He has won it four times. Captaincy is all about winning trophies,” Gambhir was quoted as saying in Star Sports Cricket Connected show. As a skipper, Rohit has won 60 out of 104 matches with a win percentage of 58.65.

Gambhir also reckons that Rohit has more laurels waiting for him in the future. “He will end up being the most successful IPL captain of all time as well. He has 4 already, he may finish at 6-7 maybe under his belt,” he added. Rohit is also the third-highest run-scorer in the IPL with 4,898 runs.

Rohit has a bit of catching up to do in order to surpass MS Dhoni’s mammoth tally of 104 victories from 174 IPL matches. Dhoni, who has captained the Chennai Super Kings and Rising Pune Supergiant, is the only IPL captain to have won over 100 matches.

Gambhir, on the other hand, had tasted quite a bit of success as well. The southpaw is currently second in the list of most IPL matches won. The Delhi-born guided the Kolkata Knight Riders to 71 wins in 129 matches with a couple of titles in 2012 and 2014.

But he won’t be able to add to his tally as he has already hung his boots after the 2018 edition. It was in 2011 when KKR brought and he served the franchise for seven seasons. Then he moved to the Delhi Daredevils, now Capitals, after which he bowed out.
