The highly competitive Asia Cup got underway today in the UAE, on the eve of the tournament opener the captains were present at the trophy unveiling event and interacted with the media. Before the press conference started all the six captains Rohit Sharma, Sarfraz Ahmed, Mashrafe Mortaza, Asghar Afghan, Angelo Mathews and Anshuman Rath sat together and were chatting along casually which they didn’t know was still being recorded.
The trio of Rohit, Sarfraz and Mashrafe having played against each other for a while are well acquainted and were thus involved in a discussion about some controversial off-field stuff as well. The subject their discussion was Bangladesh cricketer Sabbir Rahman and the most recent 6-month suspension imposed upon him by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). Mortaza told Rohit the stuff that was going on behind the scenes and how it had transpired into such a huge controversy.
Sarfraz was interested to know whether Sabbir doesn’t want to get married since that is what appeared to him from the outside. Rohit asked Mortaza to take care of his players and control them, that’s when the Bangladesh skipper mentioned that Sabbir was recently also involved in an incident where he allegedly beat a child.
Here is the video of their candid chat:
When the cameras turned on, the captains were asked about their preparations and plans. Rohit was of course posed with a question about the India vs Pakistan match and he said: “I am sure everyone is looking forward to it, but we will just focus on the match at hand. It is always exciting to play Pakistan, they have been great lately and have played very good cricket.
He also mentioned that all the teams want to use this tournament as a preparation for the World Cup that will be played next year.
“Every team wants to go to the World Cup in a good frame of mind. But we shouldn’t be looking too far ahead. Obviously the Asia Cup gives every team an opportunity to get the combination right before the World Cup,” the Indian stand-in skipper mentioned.
