Rohit Sharma is ready to captain the Indian team when opportunity comes
Rohit led India to their seventh Asia Cup title.
Indian batsman Rohit Sharma was previously appointed as the captain of the Indian team, replacing Delhi-born 29-year-old Virat Kohli, in the recently concluded Asia Cup in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). He not only led the national team to its seventh Asia Cup championship but also ensured that the Men in Blue end the tournament having not lost even a single encounter.
In the final, at one point in time, Bangladesh got India by the scruff of their necks courtesy of Liton Das and Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s 120-run stand. However, Rohit made some clever bowling changes due to which his team bowled the Tigers out for 222 runs, nine balls short of the 50 overs. Rohit hasn’t led India on many occasions, but he has tasted success in the limited chances.
I also try to think and then react
After a successful campaign, Rohit mentioned that he is set to take the responsibility of shouldering the mantle of leadership. “Absolutely (laughs)..we have just won, so I am ready. Whenever the opportunity comes, I will be ready,” Rohit was quoted as saying in Hindustan Times.
Rohit also talked about how he has learned the tricks of the trade while watching MS Dhoni, the former Indian captain, wield his magic as the captain for over almost a decade.
“Look, we always learn from (MS) Dhoni because he has been such a good captain. Whenever we encountered a problem or a question on the field, he was always there with an answer. What I have observed, him captaining the team over the years, is that he never panics.
He takes a few seconds before taking a decision, thinks about it then decides…so there is that similarity..I think I also have that. I also try to think and then react,” he added.
Dhoni led India for the maiden time in the 2007 World T20 in South Africa, which the Men in Blue won. In January 2017, he passed the baton to Virat Kohli during England’s tour of India. Recently, he had the privilege to lead India for the 200th time in ODIs when Rohit Sharma was rested for the Super 4 match against Afghanistan in Dubai.
