Rohit Sharma, the Indian batsman, has said that he’s making a strong recovery after sustaining a hamstring injury during the 2020 Indian Premier League (IPL). His injury created quite a bit of ruckus as he was left out of all three squads for the tour of Australia only to be added to the Test squad later on. The Nagpur-born couldn’t find a place in the team for the ODI and T20I series.

Sharma is currently busy training at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in order to attain the desired fitness. He has around four weeks to get back in shape before the opening Test, scheduled to start on December 17 at the Adelaide Oval.

“Hamstring is feeling absolutely fine. Just started the process of getting it nice and strong. Before I play the longer format, I absolutely needed to be clear in mind that there is no stone left unturned. That’s probably the reason, I’m at the NCA,” Sharma was quoted as saying in Sportskeeda.

It was an easy decision for me, says Rohit Sharma

Rohit reckons that he has some way to travel and understood that playing back-to-back matches in the limited-overs formats could have taken a toll on him.

“Of course, there is still some work that needs to be done on my hamstring. That’s why I didn’t go to Australia for the white-ball leg as there are back-to-back games. Around 6 games in 11 days…So I thought if I get to work on my body for 25 days, I can probably go and play the Test matches.

“I don’t know what was going on, to be honest, and what all were people talking about. But let me put this on record, I was constantly communicating with BCCI and Mumbai Indians,” the 33-year-old added. Rohit played the first few games in IPL 2020 before the hamstring injury ruled him out.

He returned in Mumbai Indians’ last league game and also scored a match-winning half-century in the final against the Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

“I told them (Mumbai Indians) that I can take the field since it is the shortest format and I will be able to manage the situation quite nicely. Once I made my mind clear, it was all about focussing on what I needed to do,” he said.

In Rohit’s absence, KL Rahul, the Orange Cap holder of IPL 2020, was appointed as the vice-captain for the shorter formats. As for Rohit, he will want to prove his worth as a Test batsman after dominating in home conditions.
