Rohit Sharma, the captain of the Mumbai Indians is perhaps one of the best batsmen in the world. The fact that he strikes the ball as cleanly as he does, makes him one of the most sought-after wickets for most bowlers. As the first match went underway as far as the defending champions were concerned, it was an immensely important one since it was against their arch-rivals – The Chennai Super Kings. However, while Rohit’s cricket would come to the fore, it was his bat that took all the acclaim.
Kevin Pietersen, the former South African-born England cricketer was seen talking to Lasith Malinga and Rohit prior to the commencement of the opening ceremony. While many made futile attempts to make guesses, it was revealed via KP’s hyperactive Twitter account. Just below Sharma’s bat sponsor – which happens to be ‘CEAT’, was the Shorai ‘Save the Rhinos project in South Africa.
While it was captured on KP’s phone, it seemed to be something that adds a lot of value to the cause of saving an animal that is seemingly becoming extinct. While all of this took place, the first outing in the context of the IPL 2018 was far from perfect as far as Rohit Sharma was concerned. Skippering the side yet again, Rohit tried in vain as he swung the bat against an impressive Deepak Chahar.
He barely connected with one delivery which landed a few inches beyond the boundary rope before he once again showcased his weakness for outswingers. He swung more and more before being dismissed by Shane Watson as the latter celebrated as though it was his first wicket, despite being retired for over 2 years. The catch was claimed by Rohit’s former teammate Ambati Rayudu as Sharma’s disappointing innings came to an abrupt end.
Kevin Pietersen tweets the photo as always
The tweet, however, came a lot before Rohit was dismissed, something Kevin Pietersen will be surely thanking his lucky stars for. As things stand, Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan have ensured a brisk revival for the Mumbai Indians.
Did you see the great man @ImRo45 with @SORAI2018 on his bat this eve?
He’s as passionate as I am in saving our rhinos! pic.twitter.com/VZgtflaTkK
