Rohit Sharma’s love affair with the Kolkata’s Eden Gardens needs no introduction as the star Indian batsman registered the highest individual ODI innings at this very venue. A year before this effort, Rohit made his long-awaited Test debut with a sensational 177-run knock to bail India out of top-order collapse. In the IPL, there is a long list of special moments that Rohit has had at one of India’s oldest cricketing venues.

Rohit made his IPL debut in 2008 while playing for the Deccan Chargers at this venue against the Kolkata Knight Riders. The game didn’t turn out to be any special for Rohit as he bagged a duck and his team lost the game by five wickets. In 2012, he struck his maiden IPL hundred against the hosts at this venue. He scored an unbeaten 109 from 60 balls as his 2nd franchise, Mumbai Indians cruised to a win.

The career-changing moment was when he was leading the Mumbai Indians in the 2013 season at this venue. MI clinched a last over thriller to initiate Rohit’s T20 and IPL captaincy debut on a positive note. The season came to an end with he led the Mumbai franchise to their maiden IPL title. Rohit, aged 26 years and 26 days, led them to a big win over the Chennai Super Kings to become the youngest captain to win the IPL title.

The 2015 IPL began with the KKR-MI game in Kolkata where Rohit scored an unbeaten 98. Though his knock came in the losing cause, Rohit Sharma completed 3000 runs in the IPL and became only the 2nd to the milestone after Suresh Raina. The 2015 season was a Déjà vu moment for Rohit and co as twice in three seasons they clinched the IPL title by defeating CSK in the final hosted at the Eden Gardens.

This time, Rohit excelled with the bat scoring a quick-fire fifty and was the player of the match. In their last league game of the 2017 season, Mumbai Indians became the first team in the Twenty20 format to complete 100 victories. The milestone win came under Rohit while playing against KKR also at the Eden Gardens. Interestingly, MI’s maiden IPL and T20 win came in the 2008 season against KKR in Kolkata.

In 2018, the Rohit-led MI visited Kolkata to register 50th IPL win under Rohit’s captaincy. This was also the 100th Twenty20 game as captain for Rohit. On Sunday, the 32-year-old became the 4th captain in IPL history to lead a team in 100 matches. This milestone game is also hosted by the Eden Gardens as MI face KKR for the first time this season.
