Sportsmen are called the best ambassadors and ace Indian batsman Rohit Sharma proved it again on Monday, when India were playing the Windies in the fourth ODI of the five-match series at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. The batsman slammed 162 off 137 balls in the game, his second hundred to a winning cause in this series but when the fans were chanting “Rohit, Rohit” while he was fielding near the boundaries in the second innings, the cricketer did something unique, leaving all impressed.

Rohit hit his 21st ODI century in the match and even though the cricketing world remains obsessed with Virat Kohli’s superhuman form, the Indian vice-captain isn’t doing it too badly either. He has hit three hundreds in his last eight matches – two of them crossing the 150-mark. He hit a match-winning hundred in the first match against the Windies in Guwahati, too, but his 162 was eclipsed by Kohli’s 140. Rohit didn’t score for the next two games but came back strongly in the fourth to help India register a mammoth 224-run win over the visitors and take an unassailable 2-1 lead in the series.

Country first, individual later

But what did Rohit do that won him tremendous accolades? As he was fielding near the ropes, the fans behind him started to cheer him “Rohit, Rohit” for his heroics with the bat. But the Mumbai batsman turned around and showed them the word “INDIA” written on his jersey front and asked them to cheer the name of the country instead. The fans obliged by changing their slogan to “India, India”.
