England pacer James Anderson has become the latest to suggest Joe Root as the skipper for the national side following the stepping-down of Alastair Cook. The fact of the matter is that many have stated that Root is the obvious choice, but the ECB has decided to take the longer route of finding the best captain for the country. While James Anderson is clear in his mind that Root is indeed the right man for the job, the fact is that many sternly believe that it could indeed be anyone from the pool of Ben Stokes, Jonny Bairstow, and perhaps even Jos Buttler.
“Root gets into situations, one-on-ones, with people. He speaks a lot of sense when he does speak and he’s a really impressive young man,” explained Anderson.
“He’s the obvious candidate. The decision is a big one because he’s our best player, so you obviously don’t want that to be affected. He loves cricket. It’s very rare you see a player that’s had the success he’s had and he’s not like that,” Anderson said.
Anderson also went on to share that Root has been a massively good vice-captain in the manner in which he has run the side in the grand scheme of things. “In the brief period Alastair Cook’s been off the field – for bathroom breaks – Root’s been in there making changes. He’s been good.
“It can be a difficult situation for a vice-captain when the captain goes off, you’re in charge and myself and Stuart [Broad] might not make it that easy to go up and talk tactics. However he’s done that and he’s been good.”

On Alastair Cook eyeing Sachin Tendulkar’s all-time Test record, James Anderson said to BBC Radio Five Live, “But [to beat Tendulkar’s record might take] five more years. Mentally, that is still a long time. I think he is fit enough, so that would not be an issue. Whether he has the drive or not will be the question. He has been in the Test team for more than a decade and was captain from 2012. Has he got the drive to do it for another five years?”
