No fan can forget the moment when underdogs Rajasthan Royals, under the leadership of Shane Warne, defied all odds and clinched the coveted trophy in the inaugural edition of the Indian Premier League. Warne and his men thumped MS Dhoni-led CSK in the 2008 IPL final to script history.

However, the Royals have had a shaky journey in the IPL. After clinching the inaugural IPL, they made it to the playoffs just three times in nine editions. Returning from their two-year suspension in 2018, RR managed to book a Playoffs berth before losing in the Eliminator. The previous year was also a dismal season for the franchise as they finished seventh and looked like one of the weakest sides of the tournament.

Ahead of their IPL 2020 season, the Royals undeniably have four of the most prolific overseas stars in their artillery– Steve Smith, Ben Stokes (expected to join in first week of October), Jofra Archer and Jos Buttler. All four world-class players are in their prime and the franchise will be relying on them to grab the second IPL title.

Royals were also pretty active in the IPL 2020 auction. With several new additions to their squad, they can aim to mount a title challenge in UAE conditions. RR got hold of Yashasvi Jaiswal, David Miller and Robin Uthappa in the auction. In the bowling department, they snapped up Andrew Tye, Oshane Thomas, Tom Curran and young Kartik Tyagi.

Will RR go all the way this season

Talking about Indian players, all eyes will be on Kerala stalwart Sanju Samson. The young wicketkeeper might not have impressed with the national side but no one can raise a finger over the potential he possesses. Samson is expected to emerge as their MVP in the department. Along with Samson, RR will rely on young Yashasvi Jaiswal. The left-hander turned heads with his impressive performances in the Under-19 World Cup earlier this year in South Africa.

One of the best modern-day all-rounders in world cricket, Stokes is yet to join the RR squad. He is currently in New Zealand with his ailing father. To fill Stokes’ void, Royals will resort to all-rounder services of Shreyas Gopal and Tom Curran. Shreyas played 14 games for the Rajasthan Royals in 2019 and picked as many as 20 wickets, including a hat-trick against RCB. On UAE tracks, he’ll be given the responsibility of providing crucial breakthroughs.

The Royals began their campaign in IPL 2020 with a win over the Chennai Super Kings on September 22 and will play against the Kings XI Punjab on September 27 in Sharjah. Their last league stage in September will be against Kolkata Knight Riders on 30th before their caravan moves to Abu Dhabi.
