The India vs Bangladesh, Nidahas Trophy 2018 final was as exciting as it could get. Both the teams were brilliant in parts and ordinary at times it all boiled down to the last ball. Team India needed 5 runs to win the match and it was Dinesh Karthik on strike. He had to hit at least a boundary and the ball was in Soumya Sarkar’s hand, he just had to ensure it was anything but a boundary. But the former sliced it over extra cover for a six and the Indian team won the series.
Rubel Hossain was their best bowler in the game but only until his final over. He had figures of 3/13 after 3 overs and Shakib Al Hasan gave his best bowler the penultimate over to ensure the task was too daunting for the Indians in the last six balls. For India, Dinesh Karthik had just walked in, and they needed 34 from 12 balls. It was a huge ask and ideally, Bangladesh should’ve defended it.
The penultimate over
But the seasoned wicketkeeper-batsman displayed exactly why he is considered such a dangerous man in the last few overs. The first ball was a low full toss and Karthik hit it straight over the bowler’s head for a six. The momentum was now in India’s favour and pressure on Bangladesh, next ball was a boundary a heave over long-on and four more runs.
It just got worse for Hossain as Karthik hit another six on the third ball and they already got 16 runs closer to the target halfway through the over. They ran a couple on the fifth ball after playing a dot and hit the last ball for a boundary to gather 22 runs from the 19th over. Team India now needed just 12 in the last 6 balls. Though it wasn’t as easy as it sounds Dinesh Karthik got them over the line with a magnificent blow on the last ball.
After the conclusion of the game, Rubel was devastated and so was the rest of the Bangladesh unit, they’d played really well in the series but the Indian team took the honours.
He posted an emotional message on his Facebook page which translates to- “Felling devastated after the completion of the match. I have never thought that Bangladesh would lose because of me after reaching so close to victory. I am apologetic to everyone. Kindly accept my apologies.”
