Contradictory to the notion that Russell Domingo has not reapplied for the South African coaching job, Cricket South Africa (CSA) spokesperson Altaaf Kazi cleared the confusion in the air as he confirmed that Domingo was one of the contenders considered by the board for the coaching post.

Earlier, there were rumours that Domingo wasn’t interested in the job anymore. Currently preparing for the four-match Test series against England, the Proteas would be looking forward to put their best foot forward coming here on the back of losses in the ODI and T20I series.

While Kazi didn’t reveal the other candidates for the job to respect the process, he did rule out speculations concerning Russell Domingo.

What caused all the stir

According to Sport24, a CSA insider revealed the other contenders who have applied for the job. The list includes the likes of all-rounder Lance Klusener, former Pakistani coach Richard Pybus and even former Proteas coaching staff member Paddy Upton.

When asked what created all the conjecture about Domingo not applied, the official stated that the link wherein he sent his CV wasn’t functioning properly and maybe that would’ve gone on to create a rumour that he hadn’t reapplied to hold his position.

When Kazi was asked for the timeframe in which the Proteas will have the next coach, he said that some decisions were supposed to be taken at CSA’s board meeting on June 21 before announcing the coach by the end of the England series.

In spite of Domingo’s application, it’s not confirmatory that he would be a favourite for the position. South Africa haven’t had a great record in recent past. After the early exit from the Champions Trophy 2017 and losses in ODI and T20I series against England, there maybe talks about the team’s performance in the recent past.

The coach viable to be selected now will in all likelihood continue to keep the job till the 2019 World Cup. Hence the board members would be wary of the fact and look ahead of time. It would be interesting to see who wraps it around.
