South Africa all-rounder Ryan McLaren has decided to call it a day on his first-class career. He played only a couple of Test matches for South Africa but was a major presence in the domestic circuit with an abundance of experience. McLaren made his Test debut for the Proteas against England in Johannesburg way back in 2010 and then played the next game four years later against Australia in Centurion. The game eventually proved to be the last of his career in whites for South Africa.

Ryan McLaren took to his official Twitter handle to announce the retirement and felt that this is the right time to move on. He was also thankful to his South Africa and County teammates and is set to have some fun in white-ball cricket now.

“I have learnt from many to know when it’s the right time. The time has come for me to retire from first-class cricket. I am grateful to share the change room with some of the best our country has produced. Words cannot describe how grateful how I am for the support I have had from my wife, family, coaches and teammates both in SA and in county cricket. I have absolutely loved every part of what this game has taught me…time for some white ball fun now,” the statement read.

Mclaren’s first-class career

Ryan McLaren played a massive 154 matches in his first-class career. He amassed 6298 runs at an average close to 34 with seven centuries and 33 half-centuries while also picking a whopping 459 wickets with the ball. The pace bowling all-rounder accounted for 15 five-wicket hauls and one 10-wicket match haul during his career.

The 35-year-old played his last first-class match recently on January 4 for the Knights and returned with the figures of 2/64 and scored only two runs with the bat as the game ended in a tame draw.
