In a spectacular display of cricketing prowess at Newlands, Sunrisers Eastern Cape clinched their consecutive SA20 titles with a resounding 89-run victory over Durban's Super Giants. Opting to bat first after winning the toss, Sunrisers showcased a commanding performance, posting a formidable total of 204 for 3 on the scoreboard. The foundation of their imposing innings was laid by two formidable partnerships.
Jordan Hermann and Tom Abell set the tone with a blistering 90-run stand off just 52 deliveries. Following suit, Aiden Markram and Tristan Stubbs further bolstered the score with an unbroken 98-run partnership, with Stubbs top-scoring at 56* from a brisk 30 balls. In stark contrast, Durban's innings struggled to find momentum from the outset.
Having arrived from Johannesburg earlier in the day after a hard-fought Qualifier victory over Joburg Super Kings, their batting lineup faltered against Sunrisers' aggressive bowling attack. Dan Worrall's incisive seam and swing, coupled with Marco Jansen's left-arm angles, proved to be a formidable challenge for Durban's batters. The early departure of Quinton de Kock, who managed only 3 runs before inside-edging onto his stumps off Worrall's delivery, set the tone for Durban's tumultuous innings.
Jansen's prowess was on full display as he returned for his third over, dismantling Keshav Maharaj's off stump before swiftly removing two more wickets in quick succession. Junior Dala managed a fleeting six before falling victim to Jansen's precision bowling. Reece Topley's dismissal sealed Durban's fate, prompting jubilant celebrations among the Sunrisers' camp.
Ryan Rickleton and Marco Jansen topped the SA20 2024 batting and bowling stats. Rickleton amassed 530 runs in 10 matches with an average of 58.89 and his highest being 98 runs. On the other hand, Jansen scalped 20 wickets in 10 matches at an impressive average of 14.30 with his best bowling figures of 5 for 30.
