New Zealand’s tryst with super overs is becoming an indelible part of modern cricketing folklore. And more so, Tim Southee has almost been part of all of the super overs winning only once for his team with his bowling. The New Zealand captain in the fourth T20I against India once again was given the responsibility to defend 14 runs and he couldn’t do it for the second time running.
In Hamilton, Southee was taken apart for 20 runs while defending 18 runs. Rather he conceded two sixes in a row when India needed 10 off the last two deliveries. And in Wellington, the scenes were repeated with the visitors putting up a better show in the one-over shootout.
Jasprit Bumrah fared well compared to the previous game conceding 13 runs. And even in Rohit Sharma’s absence, India managed to get over the line thanks to KL Rahul and Virat Kohli.
Tim Southee went for 10 runs in first two ball itself
India were always the favourites to win the super over after New Zealand managed to score only 13 runs considering the firepower they had in their batting. Tim Southee had to bowl extremely well to keep his team in the hunt. But what does New Zealand’s most experienced bowler do? He comes in and gently delivers a length ball only for Rahul to smack it for a huge six over deep midwicket.
Rahul then backed away for the second ball and Southee followed him with a bouncer and it was hit for a four as the equation came down to four runs off as many deliveries. The Kiwi skipper had his man caught in the deep to make the game interesting.
But this was India and not New Zealand to botch up the winning position. With the fielders in the deep on the legside, Virat Kohli played it smartly tucking the ball with soft hands and stole two runs. And then came the killing blow. The long hop went for a four as India sealed another super over to make it 4-0 in the series.
Tim Southee once again failed to win it for New Zealand with his bowling skills. Though one should praise him for taking up the responsibility with a young bowling attack at his expense, Twitterati trolled the pacer for not keeping his composure in crunch moments.
