Bangladeshi cricketer Sabbir Rahman is in the news yet again for the wrong reasons, this time he was caught for threatening a match referee. The incident took place on Thursday, where Sabbir allegedly was involved in a physical altercation with a fan. He apparently called up the fan behind the sight-screen and hit him.
When the Umpires got to know about the incident, he apparently threatened them that the repercussions would be severe. His behavior has shocked the umpires who were officiating the NCL’s last round match. “It will be not good for you if you complain to BCB. It won’t be good for anyone of you,” said Sabbir, as quoted by the match referee Shawkatur Rahman.
Digging a little deeper, Rajshahi and Dhaka Metro locked horns at Dhaka. Whilst making his way to the dressing room, a fan had allegedly mocked him by using the “Meow”. Sabbir felt he was being grotesquely represented like a cat, which didn’t go well with his rage. He called the fan behind the sight-screen after the game and the duo got involved in a tussle.
Not unchartered territories
It’s not the first time Sabbir Rahman has been a part of such controversies. A very talented middle-order batsman, Sabbir had a decent outing in the recently concluded Bangladesh Premier League for the Sylhet Sixers. Prior to this incident, he was also involved in a verbal spat with the umpires in 2016’s Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), which led to him getting penalized by a hefty 13 lakh taka.
His comments on Bangladesh’s ability to chase down 500 (hypothetically) didn’t go down well with the fans on social media. He became a victim of various memes and his side never really backed his words up. The 26-year-old might be fined 5 Lakh taka for this incident and the Bangladesh Cricket Board has suggested that the investigation is still going on regarding the issue.
