Virat Kohli has many names in the current cricketing circle – he’s been called a run-machine and he has also been crowned king of the sport. And as is required by the one who sits on the throne, King Kohli led by example, storming past yet another milestone. Only 11 innings ago, this man had scored his 9,000th ODI run. But on Wednesday as India took on the Windies at Vishakhapatnam, the skipper marched into an elite club of batsmen with more than 10,000 ODI runs.

But this was no ordinary feat. Kohli quite literally smashed the record of becoming the fastest cricketer to reach the five-figure mark in ODIs, going past the one and only Sachin Tendulkar. The Little Master had entered the 10K club after having played 259 innings, and is closely followed by his long-term opening partner Sourav Ganguly in the list, who needed 4 four innings than Tendulkar. Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting and South Africa great Jacques Kallis are the next two to follow, who scored 10,000 ODI runs in 266 and 272 innings respectively.

Virat Kohli, however, was in a different league altogether, winning the race against Sachin by as many as 54 innings. The Indian captain thus became the 13th cricketer in the history of the game to reach 10,000 runs in the 50-over cricket.

Consistency redefined by Virat Kohli

Records and milestones have been only fleeting images in Virat Kohli’s career so far, and the way cricket’s new legend is batting, many more records are likely to be entered into the annals of the sport’s history. The one who he defeated in the race to 10K ODI runs himself thought it only fair to congratulate Kohli on his commendable feat.

Shortly after Kohli sneaked a single and moved from 9999 to 10,000 runs in ODI cricket, Sachin Tendulkar tweeted, “The intensity and consistency with which you bat is just amazing. @imVkohli, congratulations on achieving 10,000 runs in ODIs. Keep the runs flowing.”

The Delhi boy was nevertheless hungry for more and decided he’d go the full mile. And as though it was no big deal, the skipper notched up yet another hundred in international cricket – his 37th in ODIs – to make it two back to centuries in the first two matches of the series. As far as Virat Kohli is concerned, it’s just another day at the office.
