Indian ace shuttler Saina Nehwal was crowned the winner of the women’s singles titles at the Indonesia Masters after her opponent Carolina Marin retired due to injury. The reigning Olympic champion went down on the court while defending a shot from Nehwal and injured her knee as her campaign ended abruptly.
The 25-year-old left the court in tears as she could barely walk which meant the Indian shuttler won her maiden Indonesia Masters title after reaching the finals for second straight time. The Spaniard started off the game really well with a comfortable 10-4 lead over the Indian counterpart, however, she got injured midway and had to leave the contest.
Saina, on the other hand, had a really impressive tournament with some hard fought wins. The 28-year-old had to go through an intense encounter in the semi-final against China’s He Bingjiao which the former won 18-21, 21-12, 21-18 to enter the women’s singles final. Hisar born Saina was lauded by one and all after clinching the Indonesian title for the first time in her career.
Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar also lauded the performance of the Indian ace shuttler. He took to his Twitter handle to congratulate her on her incredible display of character and her efforts to make it to the finals of the prestigious tournament and ultimately winning it. The former Indian batting legend also wished for Carolina Marin’s speedy recovery and prayed that she made a comeback to the court again soon.
“Wonderful to see @NSaina play incredibly well to reach the finals of the #IndonesiaMasters2019 and go on to become the first Indian woman shuttler to win it. Saina has had her fair share of injuries and has come out fighting fit, I’m sure @CarolinaMarin will bounce back too,” Sachin wrote on Twitter.

Saina felt bad for her opponent Marin as she mentioned the injury incident as unfortunate and was seen consoling her opponent on the court who was left crying after heartbreaking injury.
“It is an important year for all of us. This was not good at all. She is a tough competitor, she started off well and it is unfortunate what happened today,” she said after being crowned champion.
