Sachin Tendulkar fails to deliver his speech in Rajya Sabha as MPs disrupt the proceedings

Sachin Tendulkar, the cricketer turned MP’s speech in the Rajya Sabha was disrupted because of the continuous shouting from the opposition MPs in the Upper House of the Parliament. Sachin retired from cricket in 2013 and is currently a serving his term as a nominated member of the Rajya Sabha. Tendulkar was all set to deliver his first speech in the house today but things did not go as he would’ve expected.

As per the Hindustan Times, Tendulkar was supposed to speak on the issue of “Right to play and the future of sports in India”. Also, he had submitted a notice in order to lead a Short Duration Discussion on the same. The opposition members were not too keen on allowing Tendulkar to speak as they shouted slogans about the 2G scam verdict.

Tendulkar’s Rajya Sabha stint

Master blaster retired from international cricket in 2013 but he was a Rajya Sabha member well before that, Tendulkar was nominated as a member of the house in April 2012. He is often criticized for having a low attendance record of 8 percent.

As an MP, he has adopted two villages in Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra respectively, Tendulkar has sanctioned over Rs 4 crore from his MPLAD fund for development of Donja.

Due to the disruption, the proceedings were adjourned till 11 am, December 22. The chairman of the Rajya Sabha, vice president of India Venkaiah Naidu made plenty of requests but the opposition refused to let the former cricketer deliver his speech. Tendulkar last appeared in the parliament in April when members of Samajwadi party raised the issue of absenteeism in the upper house.

Tendulkar for the nation

His works with his adopted villages have been commendable, he has adopted the villages under the Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana (SAGY). Tendulkar has also worked to inspire people to follow traffic rules by coming out with his famous slogan of ‘Helmet Pehno’.
