The cricketing world has been dealt with a massive blow as AB de Villiers has decided to bid adieu to all forms for cricket for South Africa. The nation has quite a few international assignments in the next one year and de Villiers’ shock decision to step down comes as a massive blow for them. They are scheduled to play a Test, ODI and a T20I series against Sri Lanka in July.
However, they won’t be privileged with the services of the Pretoria-born cricketer. The country will also participate in the 2019 Cricket World Cup in England and Wales and the management are now in with an uphill task of finding an appropriate replacement of the legendary cricketer. De Villiers has had a roller-coaster ride in international cricket for quite some time now because of injuries.
A jaw-dropping career for de Villiers
He made a comeback to Test cricket in the four-day Day-Night Test against Zimbabwe last year. He went on to play the Test series against India. Nevertheless, a finger injury meant that he couldn’t play the whole of the ODI series against the Men in Blue. He recently represented the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the prestigious Indian Premier League (IPL).
The 34-year old notched some stupendous knocks and guided his team to victory on numerous occasions. Midway during RCB’s journey, he suffered from viral fever owing to which he was ruled out for a couple of matches in the tournament. Nevertheless, he came back and almost helped his team qualify for the playoffs of the cash rich-tournament.
Following his retirement, de Villiers’ supporters and the cricketing fraternity has been showering their accolades on one of the greatest cricketers the world has ever seen. Sachin Tendulkar, who is currently the icon of the Mumbai Indians (MI) shared a heartfelt message for the Proteas batsman.
