Former Indian captain Sachin Tendulkar is regarded as one of the greatest batsmen of all time. On Sunday, the legend revealed that phase of his cricket career as he faced anxiety and nervousness. The former Indian skipper gave valuable inputs regarding how one can battle anxiety and how to deal with mental health.
Speaking about his personal experience, Tendulkar reckoned that there was a time when he used to experience extreme anxiety and sleepless nights before the game. Sachin confessed that he faced anxiety issues for about 10 to 12 years but his brother’s advice helped him remain calm before the matches.
Sachin’s brother told him to divert his mind by doing various activities before the game including shadow batting, making tea, ironing clothes, or any other daily chores. The advice did wonders for the batting maestro as over a period of time he realized that besides preparing physically for a game, one has to work on the mental aspect too.
“Over a period of time I realized that besides preparing physically for a game, you have to prepare yourself mentally also. In my mind, the match started long before I entered the ground. The anxiety levels were very high. I felt the anxiety for 10-12 years, had many sleepless nights before a game. Later on, I started accepting that it was part of my preparation,” Tendulkar said in an interaction organized by Unacademy.

“I made peace with times I was not able to sleep in the night. I would start doing something to keep my mind comfortable. Making tea, ironing my clothes also helped me prepare for the game. I would pack my bag the day before the game, my brother taught me all of it and it became a habit. I followed the same drill even in the last match I played for India,” he added.
Further in the interaction, Tendulkar emphasized the importance of acceptance saying all of us are bound to go through ups and downs but what is important is acceptance. The former captain believes that we should accept the situation of our lives as then only we will be able to find solutions to our problems.
The Mumbai-born concluded the interaction by narrating an incident that helped him in fixing his bat swing. Tendulkar revealed that once a person got dosa in the hotel room and offered him advice by pointing that Sachin’s elbow guard was restricting the bat swing. The words said by the person were completely true and Sachin worked in the direction to solve his problem.
“That person got me dosa in the room and after keeping it on the table, he offered advice. He pointed out that my elbow guard was restricting my bat swing, which was actually the case. He helped me address that issue,” Sachin Tendulkar concluded.
