Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar urged Mumbaikars to step out of their houses and play a part through cash or kind to the residents of Shivaji Nagar, a massive slum that spills onto the Deonar dumping ground. The city was almost submerged, as flood waters did not recede even after the shower stopped. Tuesday’s rainfall was about one-third of the rainfall that triggered deluge in the year of 2005. Three people, including two children, were killed when a house collapsed in Mumbai, news agency PTI said. In near by Thane, a 32-year-old woman and a teenage girl died and two others were injured in rain-related incidents.

Three people, including two children, were killed when a house collapsed in Mumbai, news agency PTI said. In near by Thane, a 32-year-old woman and a teenage girl died and two others were injured in rain-related incidents. Many cricketers and other well-known public faces have come together in the need of the hour, and are appealing to the masses to play a role in order to come out of this natural disaster.

Sachin’s plea to the people

“Yesterday’s storm has left behind a toxic stream of devastation that’s impacting hundreds of lives at Shivaji Nagar. Apnalaya India’s emergency response team has been reaching out to families whose homes are filled with toxic waste water. Drop off any of the following items at the below mentioned centres: Plastic sheets, milk powder, ready-to-eat food, small towels, windcheaters, sanitary napkins, umbrellas, rice, dal, etc,” Tendulkar wrote on Facebook yesterday.

He posted the below picture on Instagram with a caption ” Imagine toxic water from the Deonar dumping grounds collecting in your home. That muck and stench is what the people of Shivaji Nagar have been living with since yesterday’s deluge. You can help them tide over the crisis! Contact the below Apnalaya centres to make a donation in kind or visit: https://www.apnalaya.org/donate.php to donate online.”
