Sachin Tendulkar, the former Indian cricketer, remains to be of the best sportsperson India have ever produced. As his career passed the test of times, he kept amassing a plethora of records. He turned out to be a tormenting factor for the bowlers, who tried their best to stop the Master Blaster. The Mumbaikar retired back in 2013 after playing his last international match against Windies.

Even after his retirement, a number of his records remain unharmed and will be hard to break even in the future. His fandom hasn’t taken a dip by any means even after him bidding adieu to his favourite sport. However, the veteran couldn’t have garnered so many laurels without his childhood coach Ramakant Vithal Achrekar, who passed away at the age of 86 as per reports in ABP News.

A prominent name in the cricket world

Born in 1932, Achrekar didn’t have a glorious cricketing career but made a name for himself in the coaching field. He was known for coaching youngsters at the Shivaji Park where he also tutored Tendulkar. Moreover, he founded Kamath Memorial Cricket Club, which is currently run by his daughter Kalpana Murkar and Deepak Murkar, son-in-law. He was also a selector of the Mumbai cricket team.

His only biography can be found on the book Ramakant Achrekar: Master Blaster’s Mater, penned down by journalist Kunal Purandare. Furthermore, Achrekar also coached the likes of Pravin Amre, Ajit Agarkar, Chandrakant Pandit and Vinod Kambli and many others. He had also been duly rewarded for his indefatigable dedication and devotion towards his coaching role.

Back in 1990, he was honoured with the prestigious Dronacharya Award and a couple of decades later in 2010, Achrekar was presented the Padma Shri. In the same year, he was awarded the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ by Gary Kirsten, the former South African cricketer and the World Cup-winning coach with the Indian team back in 2011.
