Sachin Tendulkar's twin wishes for birthday-boy MS Dhoni
Dhoni also became the ninth player to play 500 international matches.
In 2004, an outlandish player by the name of MS Dhoni made his foray into international cricket. He succumbed to a rather shambolic run out versus Bangladesh on his debut to be out for a duck. He couldn’t give an account of himself in the next couple of matches either, but Dhoni announced himself in Vizag with his maiden century in ODIs versus Pakistan. His Test debut came a year later and ever since he hasn’t look back, rather just surged ahead.
He was given the mantle to lead the team, devoid of big names, in the 2007 World T20 in South Africa. Even the optimists didn’t give them a chance to win the event. However, the tournament turned out to be a massive turning point of his career as the Men in Blue lifted the cup. Soon after, he was also made the ODI captain and he won India the triangular series in Australia.
With the responsibility of captaincy on his shoulders, Dhoni shelved his swashbuckling approach and sported a composed outlook. In 2011, he took the Blue Army to glory in the World Cup. The whack over long on off Nuwan Kulasekara and Ravi Shastri’s ‘finishes off his style’ commentary turned out to be an indelible memory of the Indian cricketing fraternity. He also led his team to a win in the 2013 Champions Trophy.
Sachin’s special message
He also became the first player with three ICC Trophies. Yesterday, he played his 500th international match when Virat Kohli and his men locked horns with England at the Sophia Gardens in Cardiff. Dhoni also became the ninth player to achieve the same. The calm-headed beast has turned 37 years today and wishes have flooded in for the veteran.
Sachin Tendulkar, who played quite a bit of cricket with MSD, also wished him on the occasion and also for the milestone he achieved yesterday. He took to Twitter and wrote, “Wish you a very happy birthday, @msdhoni and congratulations on playing your 500th International match. May you continue to give joy and happiness to people around you and beyond,”
