There’s little doubt over the fact that Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) are one of the most decorated sides in the Indian Premier League (IPL). It’s become clichéd to say that they haven’t won an IPL title for 12 years and they are the perennial underachievers in the history of the IPL. They’ve had the stars season after season and yet, they haven’t been able to produce the goods.

The Bangalore franchise seem to have the stars this season as well. After finishing with the wooden spoon in the 2019 edition, they swept out a major part of their squad. They retained only 13 which had only two overseas players. They went into the auction for the 2020 season with a clear mindset and bought some very good players. Aaron Finch, Chris Morris and Dale Steyn are some of the big names that RCB have bought.

RCB picked a total of eight players in the auction. Hence, with a couple of months to go for the IPL, let’s look at the salaries of each RCB player for the 2020 season.

In 2018, when teams were asked to retain a maximum of three players, <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/bcci-official-responds-to-virat-kohlis-complaint-of-team-indias-busy-schedule/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Virat Kohli</a> became the highest-earning player in the history of the IPL. While the top players from each side (in case of three retentions) were set to get INR 15 crore, RCB broke the trend and Kohli got a whopping INR 17 crore. The likes of MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma were retained for INR 15 crore but RCB went one better for their skipper.

In fact, he is the only player in the history of the league to have played for only one side for 12 seasons. The Indian and RCB captain is the leading run-getter in IPL cricket. He has amassed 5412 runs at an average of 37.85 and is consistently getting big runs. RCB is heavily dependent on him to do the bulk of the scoring. It’s no surprise that he is the highest-earning RCB cricketer.

<a href="https://www.crictracker.com/ab-de-villiers-aiming-to-make-odi-comeback-as-well/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">AB de Villiers</a> was the second player to be retained in the 2018 season. He’s been a part of the RCB setup since the start of 2011 and has played a huge role. In fact, RCB has been about Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers and the two superstars have been the driving engines of this franchise.

Along with Kohli, the team depends on de Villiers to do most of the scoring. For RCB, the South African star has scored 3724 runs at an average of 41.84 and a strike-rate of 159.55. Thus, since he was the second retained player in 2018, de Villiers’ salary in the IPL is INR 11 crore.

RCB have a habit of buying certain players who they desperately want for big money. They did buy <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/bbl-2019-20-chris-morris-showcases-his-football-skills-to-run-out-daniel-hughes/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Chris Morris</a> for a hefty sum of INR 10 crore but it’s not that overpriced as well. They’ve been guilty of paying a lot more and players haven’t delivered.

Morris is someone who is a three-dimensional player and will contribute in every department. The South African all-rounder is a fierce striker of the ball and can don the finisher’s role. He can bowl at express pace and trouble the batsmen. Moreover, he has a good yorker which makes him efficient at the death. He can field well too which makes him an entire package.

It was in 2014 that <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/best-picture-i-saw-today-rohit-sharma-mercilessly-trolls-yuzvendra-chahal/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Yuzvendra Chahal</a> first played for RCB. Moreover, it was with this franchise that he grew as a player. In fact, mastering his skill as a leg-spinner at the Chinnaswamy isn’t easy but Chahal has been RCB’s lead spinner and has learnt how to defend at small grounds like the Chinnaswamy. No player has taken more wickets than Chahal for RCB.

The Haryana leg-spinner has picked up 100 wickets at an average of 22.84. Hence, it was slightly surprising when RCB decided not to retain Chahal initially in 2018. However, they bought him back for a price of INR 6 crore using the Right To Match (RTM) card.

Just before the 2019 IPL auction, Shivam Dube smashed five sixes in an over in Ranji Trophy cricket. RCB went all out for the Mumbai all-rounder and pouched him for a sum of INR 5 crore. However, Dube hasn’t really made a mark in RCB colours.

2019 was his first IPL season and he played just four games. He batted in all four innings and scored just 40 runs, remaining unbeaten in one of those. With the ball, he hasn’t done much either. However, he made his international debut in 2019 and is expected to play a bigger part in the 2020 season.

<a href="https://www.crictracker.com/aaron-finch-reveals-why-glenn-maxwell-wasnt-picked-for-india-odi-series/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Aaron Finch</a> was one of the biggest buys of this season for RCB. He will add some firepower at the top and the team management will be hoping that he can take some pressure off Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers, who have been the premier run-getters. In fact, he could be given the license to go for the kill early on.

RCB is Finch’s eighth IPL team. The current Australian white-ball captain has played 75 games in the IPL across seven different teams. He has scored 1737 runs at an average of 25.93 and a strike-rate of 130.7 in his IPL career. At INR 4.4 crore, he is worth the buy and may have been one of the biggest steals of this auction for the 2020 season.

For the last couple of seasons, Umesh Yadav has been one of the premier fast bowlers in the RCB setup. The Vidarbha pacer has played 25 games across two seasons and has picked up 28 wickets. However, he’s been expensive at the death and hence, RCB have tended to use him early on more often than not.

Yadav was bought for a sum of INR 4.2 crore in the 2018 season. It came on the back of a successful stint with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Overall, he has played 119 games in the IPL and has picked up 119 wickets. He will once again lead the Indian pace bowling attack.

<a href="https://www.crictracker.com/kane-richardson-looking-forward-to-trying-some-vegan-food-with-virat-kohli-in-ipl-2020/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Kane Richardson</a> has played 14 games across three IPL seasons. He made his debut back in 2013 for the now-defunct Pune Warriors India (PWI) before turning out to play for Rajasthan Royals (RR) in 2014 and did well (took nine wickets from seven games). In 2016, RCB bought the Aussie pacer at his base price of INR 2 crore. He played four games and picked up seven wickets but was expensive. Hence, he was discarded and let go in the next season.

However, Richardson returns to RCB colours once again. He was bought for a price of INR 4 crore and he has been in good form of late. He’s done well in the BBL and has also been one of Australia’s preferred white-ball bowlers.

9. Washington Sundar &#8211; INR 3.2 crore

It is quite surprising that Washington Sundar has played a mere 10 games across two seasons for RCB. The Tamil Nadu off-spinning all-rounder has been doing well in domestic cricket and is a regular in the Indian T20 team as well. But he hasn’t been able to seal a spot in RCB’s starting XI consistently.

Sundar was bought by RCB in the 2018 auction. The Tamil Nadu player was coming on the back of a very good 2017 edition and had also made his international debut by then. Hence, Sundar was paid INR 3.2 crore as his IPL salary.

<a href="https://www.crictracker.com/indian-speedster-navdeep-sainis-fast-bowling-secret-revealed/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Navdeep Saini</a> has been around for a few years now and he’s been pretty impressive in domestic cricket. The Delhi fast bowler was a part of the Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals) setup in the 2017 season but didn’t play a single game. In 2018, he was picked by RCB for a sum of INR 3 crore.

However, Saini didn’t feature in a single game in the 2018 season. But he was pretty impressive in 2019. The Haryana-born pacer played 13 games and picked up 11 wickets. He impressed with his pace and also, the lengths he bowled were good. Hence, he got an India call-up after the World Cup and has become one of the key pacers in the side in the absence of a few frontline fast bowlers in white-ball cricket.

Mohammed Siraj was pretty impressive in his debut IPL season as he took 10 wickets from six games for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). RCB went after the Hyderabad-born fast bowler and scalped him for a sum of INR 2.6 crore. He has played 20 games and has been one of the premier Indian pacers over the last two years.

However, Siraj hasn’t really lived up to expectations. He has picked only 18 wickets and has been expensive as well. He has leaked a lot of runs at the death but RCB have continued to keep faith in him and it will be interesting to see how they use him this season.

<a href="https://www.crictracker.com/i-celebrated-like-a-champion-dale-steyn-shuts-down-a-twitter-user-with-an-epic-reply/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Dale Steyn</a> made his IPL debut with RCB. The ace South African fast bowler played the first three seasons with the Bangalore franchise before moving to Deccan Chargers in 2011. He has played for Sunrisers Hyderabad and Gujarat Lions as well.

However, last season, Steyn was brought in as an injury-replacement and brought life into RCB’s attack. It lasted only two games as a shoulder injury ruled him out and he was also released ahead of the auctions. But the team management reposed faith in the South African star and bought him back for his base price of INR 2 crore.

For two successive seasons, <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/moeen-ali-hits-out-for-being-made-englands-scapegoat/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Moeen Ali</a> hasn’t played all the games. However, he’s been impressive and has also consistently delivered. It was in the 2018 auction that he was bought for a sum of INR 1.7 crore. There were mixed reactions to the signing but Ali has proved his worth.

The England all-rounder may not have picked up a lot of wickets but he has been consistent and has an economy of 6.96. Meanwhile, Ali has scored 297 runs at a strike-rate of 165.92 and has registered three half-centuries as well. Hence, he is a utility cricketer and has done well in the limited opportunities he’s got.

It may come as a big surprise but Parthiv Patel is the sixth leading run-getter for RCB in the history of the IPL. The left-handed wicket-keeper batsman has played three seasons for RCB (2014, 2018, 2019) and has accumulated 731 runs at a strike-rate of 130.07.

He has been decent at the top of the order, especially in the powerplay. He’s been tidy behind the stumps and will go in as the first-choice wicket-keeper this season as well. Patel was bought for a sum of INR 1.5 crore in the 2018 auctions.

In 2017, Pawan Negi was one of the leading wicket-takers for RCB. He made full use of the turning nature of the Chinnaswamy track and was RCB’s lead spinner alongside Chahal. However, his form has dipped over the last couple of seasons and he’s struggled with both bat and ball.

In 2018, it came as a big surprise when RCB decided to use their Right To Match (RTM) card for the left-handed all-rounder. He was bought for a sum of INR 1 crore. Across three seasons, Negi has played 21 games and picked 20 wickets and hasn’t had a big impact with the bat.

<a href="https://www.crictracker.com/rcb-had-spent-9-cr-in-the-mock-auction-to-buy-sri-lanka-all-rounder-isuru-udana-reveals-mike-hesson/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Isuru Udana</a> is an experienced cricketer and has been playing domestic cricket since 2008. He is a utility cricketer and can have an impact in all three departments of the game. The left-arm fast bowler is suited for white-ball cricket. He has quite a few variations and can be useful at the death.

Moreover, he can give it a tonk towards the end and can also field well. This will be Udana’s maiden IPL season and he has been in good form. He was bought by RCB for his base price of INR 50 lakh. He will be one of the backup pacers and might come into the picture on slow decks.

It is a little-known fact that Gurkeerat Singh Mann has played for India. It was in Australia in 2016 that he made his debut and played three ODI games. He couldn’t really make a mark and was dropped after the tour. He’s been featuring in the IPL since 2012 and has played for a couple of other franchises as well.

In 2019, the Punjab all-rounder was bought for his base price of INR 50 lakh. However, he played just three games in the entire season. In fact, in the final game of the season, Mann played a fine innings and scored 65 to take RCB home while chasing 176.  It’ll be interesting to see if he makes it to the XI straightaway this season.

There has been a lot of talk about Devdutt Padikkal in recent times. The left-handed opening batsman has been in fine form and has been scoring runs consistently for Karnataka. He has got runs across formats and he finished as the leading run-getter in Vijay Hazare and Syed Mushtaq Ali in the 2019-20 season.

Hence, there are already calls for his inclusion in the RCB playing XI. The Karnataka lad was bought in the 2019 auction at his base price of INR 20 lakh. But he did not get a chance and Padikkal will be hoping he can make full use of his current form if the opportunity arises.

When RCB bought Joshua Philippe, there was some element of surprise. Not a lot of them had heard about the Sydney Sixers wicket-keeper batsman. However, Philippe has made a lot of noise and has scored consistently in this 2019-20 season of the BBL. He is leading the run charts for Sydney Sixers and has scored 340 runs at an average of 34.00. His attractive stroke-play influenced RCB management to go for him. Thus, he was picked at a base price of INR 20 lakh.

Pavan Deshpande is only the second player from Karnataka to feature in this RCB squad. The 30-year-old was bought for his base price of INR 20 lakh in the 2020 season. He was even a part of the squad in 2018 but he didn’t a single game. It could be the case once again.

Deshpande was bought at his base price of INR 20 lakh. He’s been in good form. The left-hander has a good T20 record. Deshpande has scored 426 runs at an average of 47.33 and a strike-rate of almost 150. With the talent pool available, Deshpande may not get a game.

Shahbaz Ahmad was another surprising pick in this 2020 edition of the auction. Ahmad is a 25-year-old wicket-keeper batsman who has never made it to any IPL team before. Moreover, he’s played 29 T20Is and he’s done well. He has a List ‘A’ and T20 cricket average more than any other format. Shahbaz Ahmad averages 38.15 in 16 T20 games. He has a strike-rate of 128.45 in T20 cricket. However, Ahmad is likely to play the role of a backup and apply some finishing touches to the innings.

Virat Kohli is the highest-paid cricketer not only in RCB but also in the IPL.
