Pakistan opening batsman Salman Butt had to swallow the bitter pill after Twitterati trolled him for complaining about cheating. Butt accused the opposition for cheating during one of the games of the Quaid-e-Azam between WAPDA and Peshawar. The game was a thriller as WAPDA required four runs to win the match with just one wicket in hand and with more than 75 over left in the day’s play.

Peshawar bowler Taj Wali ran the non-striker batsman out while on his run-up, as Mohammad Irfan stepped out of the popping crease before the ball was delivered. The umpires took their time but at the end went ahead with the law and ruled Irfan out.

Umpires consulted with the fielding side

Umpires Ahmed Shahab and Faisal Afridi had a word with the fielding team and asked them if they wish to take back the appeal. But Peshawar decided to stick to it and ended up winning the game by three runs. WAPDA skipper Salman Butt questions the sportsmanship of the opposition.

“What’s the point of this law when the winning team isn’t proud and ashamed instead?” Butt told ESPNcricinfo. “We had a great game, fully competitive throughout four days, which saw both teams’ fortunes fluctuate. And suddenly this mankading spoiled it. Sportsman spirit should have been the top priority but the game didn’t end in a proper way. What’s the point of this law when the opponent team despite winning apologises to us?” The cricketer turned out to be the ‘butt of many jokes’ as Twitterati gave it back to the skipper.

Law 41.16: Non-striker leaving his/her ground early

If the non-striker is out of his ground from the moment the ball comes into play to the instant when the bowler would normally have been expected to release the ball, the bowler is permitted to attempt to run him/her out. Whether the attempt is successful or not, the ball shall not count as one in the over. If the bowler fails in an attempt to run out the non-striker, the umpire shall call and signal Dead ball as soon as possible.
