The former Sri Lankan legend Sanath Jayasuriya is struggling with physical conditions and is unable to walk without crutches currently. He has been suffering from the knee problems for quite some time now and will undergo the surgery now to be able to walk on his own again. He was in the news recently for a lot of wrong reasons and it seems that nothing is going well for the left-hander. However, it remains to be seen if the surgery helps Jayasuriya to regain his fitness like before.

The left-hander, post his cricketing career, served Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) twice as the chairman of the selection committee. But his tenure was filled with controversies as the national side failed to live up to the expectations at the highest level. Also, the committee made a lot of changes to the team which led to the players feeling insecure about their position in the team. Finally, in 2017, Sanath and his team had to resign after the team’s hapless performances against South Africa away and against India at home.

Surgery in Melbourne

According to the reports in Ceylon Today, Sanath Jayasuriya is unable to walk without crutches and would have to undergo a serious knee surgery. Reportedly, he will fly to Australia in the first week of January and will get it done in Melbourne. The whole procedure would take a month as post-surgery he might be kept under observation to avoid any further complications. Also, the care would be taken to see if he is able to walk again on his own after the surgery.

The 48-year-old, before retiring in 2011, was a strong pillar of Sri Lankan team. He amassed 6973 runs in 110 Tests at an average of 40 and more than 13,000 runs in the 50-over format in a whopping 433 outings for his country. He also featured for Sri Lanka in 31 T20 Internationals as his game was most suited for the shortest format. Unfortunately, he had to hang his boots due to the age limitations and one would hope that the legendary cricketer successfully undergoes the surgery in Australia.
