Former Indian captain Sandeep Patil was named the brand ambassador of the Indian indoor cricket team. The announcement was made ahead of the 10th edition of the World Indoor Cricket Federation (WICF) World Cup. The tournament is scheduled to kick off on 16th September and will conclude on 23rd September.
The unique event will be held in partnership with Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) and Cricket Australia (CA) at the Insportz Club in Dubai. It will bring together the finest indoor cricketing talent from nations including Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, England, Sri Lanka, India, Singapore, Malaysia and the UAE.
“I am delighted to be the ambassador of the Indian indoor team. It is always a pleasure to be associated with this great game. I sincerely wish my indoor team the best in the tournament,” Patil commented on his new role.
Sandeep Patil’s contribution to cricket
The 60-year-old Patil played 29 Tests and 45 One Day Internationals for India from 1980-1986. He was one of the crucial members of the World Cup-winning side in 1983. The veteran was a dashing batsman and a useful medium pace bowler. He amassed over 1500 runs in the longest format of the game, 174 being the highest.
Patil later served as the manager of the Indian team in 1996 and then led Kenya to the semi-final as coach in 2003 World Cup. Soon he took over the coaching duties of Oman and helped them qualify for the ICC Trophy after some strong performances in the ACC Trophy. Following a coaching stint with India’s National Cricket Academy in Bangalore, he was named the chairman of the national selection panel in September 2012.
The legendary cricketer has been involved with the game some way or the other and this time he will be the face of the Indian indoor cricket team.
