Sandeep Patil terms Gautam Gambhir as the 'Amitabh Bachchan of Indian Cricket'
"It was due to his ‘angry young man’ attitude" - Sandeep Patil.
Veteran Indian opener Gautam Gambhir is not having the best of times with the bat, while playing in the eleventh edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) for Delhi Daredevils (DD). After winning two IPL titles while leading the Kolkata Knight Riders, he decided to return to his native IPL franchise Delhi Daredevils for a new journey. But the Delhi lad could not replicate the favourable fortunes in his homecoming, as under his leadership, Delhi lost 5 of their first six games, after which Gambhir decided to step down from the helm of things.
Gambhir has that’angry young man’ attitude: Patil
After Gambhir’s resignation from the captaincy role, the opener was also dropped from the playing XI in the very next game against Kolkata Knight Riders. The new DD skipper Shreyas Iyer played a spectacular unbeaten match-winning inning in that game to power his team towards the highest score in this season. Former Indian cricketer and a chief selector Sandeep Patil revealed that he believes Gambhir is perfectly suited to be called as the ‘Amitabh Bachchan of Indian Cricket’.
Patil compared the veteran Indian cricketer to another veteran Bollywood celebrity, Amitabh Bachchan, for his ‘angry young man’ attitude. He feels that Gambhir’s angry attitude problem is the major reason for his downfall in the international arena and now in the IPL 2018. Patil was the chief Indian selector when Gambhir was dropped from the Indian team.
“It was due to his ‘angry young man’ attitude that I nicknamed him the Amitabh Bachchan of Indian cricket,” wrote Patil in his article for The Quint.
Gambhir was dropped from the Indian team for his attitude problem
The 36-year old Indian cricketer last played for India in the home Test series against England in 2016. The former Indian chief selector also mentioned in his column that Gambhir was dropped from the national team because of ever growing attitude problems.
“He was dropped from the Indian team and the main reason behind it was his ever-growing so-called ‘attitude problem’,” noted the former Indian cricketer in his article.
