Sanga-Jaya bid farewell to T20 Internationals
The warm-ups of the world T20 had begun and with it came a big news from the Sri Lankan dressing room. Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardane the two pillars of Sri Lankan cricket who have served the country in the cricket field for over a decade have both decided to call it a day from T20 cricket after the World T20 2014. The news came on the occasion of their first warm up match against India.
It is expected to have a huge impact on the Sri Lankan team as they have had the cushion and habbit of having them to soak up all the pressure and lead the team to great success over the years. The two retiring together would create a huge vacuum in the squad an era would end for sure.
Jayawardane a classic, stylish, elegant batsman who has evolved as one of the biggest match winners for Sri Lanka in all the formats test, ODI’s and T20’s as well. T20 was considered to be game for the hard hitters but a player with his level of skill can never be taken out of the game may what be the format. A look at his impact on T20 cricket with his international T20, IPL and SPL stats.
Sangakkara not only batted but also kept wickets to let his team play with an extra bowler, he ensured full commitment and dedicated effort for his team every time he wore the Sri Lankan jersey. He can play the waiting game and tire the bowlers in the tests and efficiently shift gears to an aggressive power player in the T20’s. Take a look at the statistic he has in T20’s international and domestic leagues.
It is time for transition in Sri Lankan cricket and retiring first from T20’s the duo give the team a chance to find players who can take their positions and fill the void. True legends respected across nations even outside the cricketing field. Tribute to Sanga and Mahela from CricTracker.
