The Pakistan cricket team came to the Asia Cup this year as one of the favourites but their ordinary show in the tournament has left the fans and former players livid. Having thumped by arch-rivals India, it was always going to be tough for the Men in Green and the eruption was seen after Sarfraz Ahmed was shown the door by a determined Bangladesh in the final Super Four game which was a virtual semi-final.

Pakistan’s bowlers did well to restrict Bangladesh to 239 but their batting woes did them in once again in the tournament. They managed 202 for 9 in 50 overs after a top order collapse and the possibility of a Champions Trophy-like comeback was buried for the two-time Asia champions.

The players were now being mocked and targeted for their show and veteran cricketer Shoaib Malik, the only one in the side to show some consistency in batting, was also not spared and it was his wife Sania Mirza who came to his rescue. Malik scored two fifties and one 40-odd score in five innings that he played in this Asia Cup and on both occasions against India, he was the one to offer some resistance.

Sania’s reply sees Pak journo delete his tweet

One Pakistani journalist took a dig at 36-year-old Shoaib Malik on Twitter, posting a message in Urdu accusing Malik of playing to impress his Indian wife and not for his country. Sania, who is expecting her first child with Malik next month, replied to the journalist, saying: “Arre bechaara.. clearly the poor guy has been watching a different Asia Cup!!”

The journalist deleted his tweet thereafter.

Malik was Pakistan’s main hope in the game against Bangladesh as well but a magnificent catch by captain Mashrafe Mortaza off Rubel Hossein’s bowling saw him returning to the pavilion at a score of 30 and it derailed his side’s chase.

Sania had tweeted ahead of the India-Pakistan game on September 19 saying that she would take a break from social media for sometime since “the amount of nonsense thts gonna b said here can make a ‘regular’ person sick, let alone a pregnant one.” She nevertheless had to come back to defend her cricketer husband before the tournament ended.
