The two nations stood there waiting for the opportunity to hold on to the trophy, but the cruel game only allowed one winner for the day, and it was Pakistan, who gasped the match from the rivals on the day when it all mattered. India‘s Tennis star Sania Mirza, before taking the jet to England to attend the India-Pakistan final in London, had the most difficult of decisions to make.
Her husband Shoaib Malik is one of Pakistan’s senior most players, and the team from her country India was on the other side. The Hyderabadi star was trolled on social media for her tweet following Pakistan team’s win, although she made it clear which side she was on.
People make things dramatic
“I support my husband, of course, but I support India too. It’s not as dramatic as people want to make it sound. They think we are at each other with knives every time India plays Pakistan. It’s not like that,” Mirza told ESPN recently. “We have to remember, it’s sport. That’s the message every athlete wants to put across. It doesn’t matter. When India lost to Pakistan, they lost a game of cricket, that’s the bottom line. It’s not war or a matter of life and death,” she added.
Hatred for the Tennis star
She added that despite her husband being a Pakistani, Sania did not face as much hatred as one would have assumed.
“There are probably 20 per cent haters, but it’s still a large number of people. I feel sad for them that they have so much hate for a person they don’t even know,” she said.
However, in the end, Pakistan was the better side on the night cruising past the Indian side, which failed to capitalise on their chances to wrap up their third Champions Trophy win in the history.
