Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar was the center of attraction on Twitter following his comments on Team India’s playing XI which didn’t feature a single Mumbaikar while the team was playing in Mumbai. It was the first time since 1933 that not even a single Mumbai player could make it to the Playing XI of a Test played in Mumbai.
Although Shardul Thakur was added to the squad prior to the match but he was eventually omitted from the Playing XI to mark a rare happening. Since 1933 when the Bombay Gymkhana located in South Mumbai hosted the first Test not only in the city but in the entire country no Indian team has played without a Mumbaikar in the Playing XI.
However with Ajinkya Rahane’s missing out from the squad for the remainder of the series after sustaining a freak finger injury during a practise session and Thakur who was brought in as Mohammed Shami’s cover also not included, it meant for the first time since the inception of cricket in the country, there was no representatives from Mumbai while the team played a Test in the financial capital of India.
Sanjay Manjrekar took to his Twitter handle and wrote he was pleasantly surprised with the amount of crowd in the Wankhede despite Team India going without a single local player especially in a city which is very rich in its cricketing culture.
Though he wrote that he was proud of what he saw, people didn’t take the comment too well and many fans of the Indian team decided to let him know that India’s competence at the highest level can never be judged by the ethnicity of players.
While Manjrekar might have tried to point out that it was the very first time India was playing without a member from Mumbai his reference with a huge crowd turnout was perhaps the wrong step on his part. This is not the first time that the commentator was trolled by the public as a similar type of incident took place when he indulged in an exchange with Indian Tennis ace Sania Mirza.
Not a single Mumbai player in the team, but the crowd came in large numbers even on a Monday morning to see Indian cricket win. #Proud
