On Sunday, May 12, the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad was a witness to a nail-biting encounter between the Mumbai Indians (MI) and the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). It was the Final of the 2019 Indian Premier League (IPL) and the game had all the ingredients to keep the audience at the edge of their seats. In the end, it was Rohit Sharma’s Mumbai that came out trumps by one run.
Lasith Malinga bowled the last over of the game and defended nine runs off it, dismissing Shardul Thakur in the last ball to give Mumbai their fourth IPL championship. In the meantime, Sanjay Manjrekar, who was one of the commentators during the epic clash, was a recipient of severe backlash after he tried to advertise the Mumbai-based franchise from the commentary box.
Twitter trolls Sanjay Manjrekar
Mumbai won the toss and had no hesitation whatsoever to bat first on what seemed to be a belter of a strip. Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock went hammer and tongs in the mandatory powerplay and racked up an opening wicket stand of 45 runs off 29 deliveries. It was Shardul Thakur, who broke the stand, getting rid of De Kock, who got 29 off 17 balls with four over-boundaries.
Manjrekar admired the duo, but also advised De Kock to be a tad cautious in his stroke-making, seeing the South African batter throwing the kitchen sink at everything. The South African perished after mistiming a pull-shot and MS Dhoni didn’t make any mistake in grasping the leather. Meanwhile, Manjrekar’s words for Mumbai didn’t go down well with the fans by any stretch of the imagination.
The netizens on Twitter trolled him for the comments and also called him biased towards Mumbai, the city he comes from. A fan even asked him to sit in the stands, cheering for his favourite team, and not in the commentary box.
Here is how Twitter took Manjrekar’s case for being biased:
@BCCI can you stop @sanjaymanjrekar from commenting in important matches like IPL Final. Biased and irritating. Mumbai Mumbai and only Mumbai.

Why is a commentator @sanjaymanjrekar so biased in his commentary in favour of Mumbai Indians? He should sit in the stands and cheer his favourite team @BCCI @IPL @ChennaiIPL
