Sanju Samson is in the middle of a stern test, mostly about staying fit. He had a stupendous campaign with the willow for the Rajasthan Royals in the cash-rich Indian Premier League. On the backs of some stupendous knocks, he was drafted into India A’s squad for their tour of England. However, fate had other plans for the wicketkeeper-batsman from Trivandrum.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) earlier made the yo-yo test a mandate in order for players to be a part of their respective teams. They set a benchmark of 16.1 out of 25 as a selection criterion. Unfortunately, Samson missed the same with a number of 15.6 in June and hence, he was left out of the team. Ishan Kishan, the 20-year-old, was roped in as his replacement.
Samson roars back with authority
The failure wasn’t something to rejoice for the youngster, but he didn’t let it fizzle out the zeal to succeed from him. Rather he made a relentless effort to get himself in shape. After faltering in the test, he met MS Dhoni, who is known to be an epitome of fitness. The meet-up would definitely have benefitted him as one month later, he passed the test with flying colours without any hiccup.
From 15.6, his numbers jumped to a staggering 17.3 and he also bragged about his progress on the social media platform. To multiply his joy, the pugnacious potential was recently selected in India A’s team which will play a quadrangular series involving South Africa A, Australia A and India B from August 17 to 29. Meanwhile, Ishan will keep wickets for India B.
Despite the inclusion, Samson shouldn’t nurture any complacency by any means. He is amongst the brightest talents in the country and with India scheduled to play quite a few matches in the next one year, Samson has an opportunity to stake his claim into the team. He has only played only a solitary match for the national team and it goes without saying that Samson will have to walk a tightrope from here on.
