Pakistan and Sri Lanka will play three-match ODI series in Karachi on September 27, marking the return of a top-ranked international team to Pakistan after Zimbabwe had come in 2015 and a World XI came for a T20I series a couple of years back. Sri Lanka will also play three T20I matches on this tour in Lahore. However, the first ODI was abandoned due to heavy rains in Karachi.

The Lankan side is bereft of a majority of its top-tiered players like Lasith Malinga, Dimuth Karunaratne, Thisara Perera, Dinesh Chandimal and others, as 10 players refused to travel to their Asian counterparts. Lahiru Thirimanne and Dasun Shanaka will lead the ODI and T20I teams respectively on this tour and if the encounters become successful, Pakistan may also ask Lankans to play the Tests here itself.

Bhutto’s speech on rains in Karachi is made fun of by Sarfaraz

Sarfaraz Ahmed looked at ease during the pre-match press conference and even made a joke on politician Bilawal Bhutto. Rains in Pakistan are a completely different beast given the poor drainage system, blocked drains and no way for water to get out of the city. Broken electricity connections turn the monsoon season into a horrible disaster for the residents of the country and the worst has been borne by people living in Karachi, the financial capital of the country.

Often called the sister city of Mumbai, Karachi was and is one of the most populous cities in the world and rains in the Sindh region have been making living in Karachi a life in hell. Recently in a rally, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Bilawal Bhutto, son of former Pakistan PM late Benazir Bhutto was seen giving an explanation for the amount of rain that Sindh gets.

He was quoted as saying, “When it rains, water comes down. When it rains more, more water comes down.” This statement was used by Sarfaraz Ahmed to show off his sense of humor on the eve of the first ODI between Pakistan and Sri Lanka in Karachi and when asked about rains and water on the outfield in the National Stadium, the Pakistan captain took a dig at Bhutto and said,  “As far as outfield is concerned I would say that ‘when it rains, water comes down.”
