Misbah-ul-Haq, the head coach of Pakistan made it clear that the former captain, Sarfaraz Ahmed was being considered to be a part of ICC World T20 squad. Sarfaraz Ahmed was dropped and stripped of his captaincy from the side earlier for the Tour of Australia. His performances in the home series against Sri Lanka was quite disappointing. His poor run in the series led to this action from the selection board. Post World Cup 2019, fitness issues were also raised against him.
Leading the side for Quetta Gladiators in the PSL 2020 did bring some luck for Sarfaraz. He was able to play some important knocks to get his side over the line. The right-hander’s captaincy skills were also into action as the side encountered some tough situations. As the tournament progresses, the wicket-keeper batsmen will be under the scanner.
Misbah, while speaking to Geo News, indicated that Sarfaraz was putting up some good performances in the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) and that the wicket-keeper batsman was on track with his fitness which could lead to a possible call-up. Although the competition for a spot in the squad for World T20 is too much, the experienced 32-year-old will have an upper hand.
“Sarfaraz has been playing very well in the PSL 2020 and he is also fit. While he is in consideration for the World Cup, there will be matches after the PSL to decide which player will get the call,” he said.
Sarfaraz will have to consistently perform in all aspects of the game to be considered for the spot. His previous performances for the national side doesn’t reflect well on him. Hence, he will be under a good amount of pressure to impress the selectors.
Selectors on the hunt ahead of T20 World Cup
The chief selectors also mentioned that there will be few additional matches before the World T20 tournament commences. So as to make appropriate decisions for the squad selection. It is always believed that Franchise leagues should not be considered as a test for players to get back their position in the national side. However, good performances in the tournament will certainly raise their chances significantly.
Misbah and staff have been on the lookout for some good talents ahead of the T20 World Cup. Many players are set to make comebacks into the team after showing some good signs in the on-going PSL. These players will have to maintain their form and consistency beyond this league to ensure their seat in the World Cup squad.
