Pakistani cricketers and their knack of being unconsciously hilarious have made the news more often than we care to think. Most recently, it was the skipper of the Pakistan team Sarfraz Ahmed who cracked up reporters with a hilarious comment at a press conference.
In the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy, Pakistan defeated world no.1 team South Africa on Wednesday to keep their semi-final hopes alive. After having suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of defending champions India, Pakistan did extremely well to restrict the Proteas to just 219 in the first innings.
Paceman Hasan Ali was the pick of the bowlers with 3 wickets for just 24 runs from his 8 overs. Imad Wasim was brilliant as well; he chipped in with 2 wickets while maintaining a miserly economy rate of 2.50.
Following their lackluster performance against India which saw several fielding lapses and poor bowling, Pakistan put in a top-notch show to stifle the South Africans. Eventually, as rain interrupted play, Pakistan were 19 runs ahead of the DLS par score at the end of 27 overs.
Rain had the final word at Edgbaston, and Pakistan grabbed two valuable points to make things interesting in the Group B standings.
Sarfraz Ahmed and his hilarious reply
Quite understandably, skipper Sarfraz Ahmed was in a good mood following his team’s clinical performance. “I think today one of the differences was our bowling and our fielding,” said Sarfraz at the post match conference.
Since the fielding was markedly better against South Africa, it prompted one of the reporters to ask Sarfraz what the team focused on to make the fielding better. In response, Sarfraz said, “Actually we do nothing,” much to the laughter of those attending the press conference.
Pakistan are currently ranked 3rd in the standings, behind South Africa and table toppers India. However, the three are tied at 2 points and are only separated because of net run rate. Pakistan are yet to play Sri Lanka Monday, June 12, which will be a must win game for the Green Shirts if they wish to qualify for the semis.
