Saurashtra captain Jaydev Shah announces retirement
He was part of the Rajasthan Royals' title-winning campaign in the inaugural edition of the IPL.
Mohammad Hafeez and Gautam Gambhir were two renowned cricketers who announced their retirements from the game on Tuesday to shock the cricketing fraternity. Though the Pakistan veteran will continue to play in the limited-overs format, his team will miss him in the whites. The trend of players retiring from the game seems to have begun now as Saurashtra captain and one of the most experienced players Jaydev Shah has decided to call it quits mid-season.
The upcoming fifth round game between Saurashtra and Karnataka of the ongoing Ranji Trophy season will be the last game of his career. He is the son of the former BCCI and Saurashtra Cricket Association secretary Niranjan Shah and was also picked by the now-defunct Gujarat Lions franchise in 2017 for his base price of Rs 20 lakh.
However, this wasn’t the first time he was picked by any team in the cash-rich league. Jaydev Shah has rubbed the shoulders with some of the big players as he was the part of Rajasthan Royals in 2008 during their triumph before Mumbai Indians snaffled him through transfer window in the next season. In 2011, Deccan Chargers picked him then in 2011 before going back to Mumbai franchise again during the 2016 IPL auction.
Indian Express reported the news of Jaydev’s retirement as he is set to play his last game which will commence on Thursday in Rajkot.
Jaydev’s cricketing career
The 35-year-old Jaydev Shah has played 115 first-class matches amassing 4927 runs with nine centuries and 18 half-centuries to his name. Even in the ongoing season, he has been the highest run-getter for Saurashtra so far scoring 326 runs in four matches at an average of 65.2 smashing a century and fifty each. He would be hoping to complete 5000 first-class runs before going out of the bow and if his team manages to get better of Karnataka, it would be icing on the cherry for him in his farewell game.
Despite playing more than 100 first-class matches, Jaydev comparatively struggled in the shorter forms representing his state team only in 60 List A and 36 T20 matches. Even his team would be looking to bid him adieu with an exceptional performance in his final match.
