Getting run out is certainly one of the worst feelings for a batsman. The agony instantly multiplies for the batsman when he gets caught short on 99. There have been a few moments when the world has witnessed a dejected and heartbroken batsman walking back after getting run out on 99.

Talking about the fast-paced T20 format, there have been three occasions when a player has got run out on 99– 1. Virat Kohli vs Delhi Daredevils (2013), 2. Marcus Stoinis vs Brisbane Heat (2017) and 3. Rahmanullah Gurbaz vs Amo Sharks (2020).

Gurbaz was the recent entrant in the list after he fell short of the crease in Match 9 of Shpageeza Cricket League. After winning the toss and electing to bat first, Kabul Eagles’ skipper Gurbaz emerged as their talisman as they posted a dominant total of 223 on the scoreboard. However, Gurbaz couldn’t reach the three-figure mark as he got run out on 99 in the 13th over. Nevertheless, he scored a brilliant knock and hit 6 fours and 8 sixes during his inning.

Virat Kohli had got run out on 99 against Delhi in IPL 2013

A similar kind of incident happened with current India skipper Virat Kohli in 2013 when Royal Challengers Bangalore faced Delhi Daredevils. While batting first, the Bangalore franchise scored 183 from 20 overs with their skipper leading them from the front. After losing both the openers in the first PowerPlay, Kohli ensured that his side doesn’t face a collapse.

Steading RCB’s run-flow, Kohli stayed at the crease until the last ball before he got run out on 99. By the end of the penultimate over, Kohli was batting on 76. In the first five deliveries of the last over, he smashed 22 runs, taking his score to 98. But he eventually failed to cross the finish line while trying to sneak a double on the last ball. The RCB skipper fell short of the crease and missed a well-deserved ton.

Australia all-rounder Marcus Stoinis also had to return heartbroken on 99 after getting run out in a BBL encounter against Brisbane Heat. Stitching a fifth-wicket stand of 137 with James Faulkner, Stoinis kept Melbourne Stars’ hopes alive. However, Stoinis’ brilliant 51-ball knock came to an end in the final over where Stars needed 24 to win.

After being dropped from the third ball of the over and running two to reach 98, Stoinis was again put down in the deep off Mark Steketee. However, he got run out this time while searching for a second run. Stoinis’ knock went in vain as Stars suffered a 15-run defeat against Heat.
