Former New Zealand allrounder Scott Styris, on Tuesday, revealed his picks for India’s squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup. The marquee event will get underway in Australia this October and India will be desperate to lay their hands on the trophy. The Men in Blue have not won an ICC tournament since winning the Champions Trophy in 2013.
Speaking on Star Sports, Scott Styris surprisingly picked Shubman Gill in his team although the highly-rated batsman is yet to make his T20I debut. Gill, in fact, has never even received a call-up from the T20I side but has proved he can do well in the shortest format of the game by impressing in IPL. In another surprise pick, the ex-cricketer-turned-commentator also picked Sanju Samson.
While Samson has been doing extremely well in IPL in the last few years, he has not managed to convince the team management. After earning a recall in November, Samson has been with the team since then but is yet to play a single game. His only T20I appearance came in 2015 when he made his debut in Zimbabwe. Styris also left out Shivam Dube as well as Manish Pandey and stuck with tried and tested names.
India thrash Sri Lanka in the second T20I
Scott Styris announced his team when India were playing against Sri Lanka in the second T20I in Indore. The hosts beat the visitors by seven wickets in a lopsided contest to take an unassailable lead in the three-match series after the first game was abandoned without a ball being bowled.
Asked to bat first, Sri Lanka managed to post only a modest total of 142 for 9 in the allotted 20 overs. They were off to a decent start as their openers Danushka Gunathilaka and Avishka Fernando added 38 runs for the first wicket. However, the visitors failed to close their innings strongly and finished on a below-par total on a good track.
In reply, India chased down the total with utmost ease. In-form KL Rahul was in his elements once again while Shikhar Dhawan played the role of the second fiddle as the India openers added 71 runs in 9 overs. Both of them departed in quick succession but it did not let Sri Lanka claw their way back in the game. Skipper Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer shared a fifty-plus stand to help India cross the finishing line.
Scott Styris’ India squad for T20 World Cup 2020:
