Ahead of Zimbabwe’s limited over series against Ireland, what came into the limelight was the news of Sean Williams’ retirement. Williams had written a letter to Zimbabwe Cricket to inform them that he will hang up his boots after serving the three months’ notice at the end of November.
Williams seemed to be unhappy with the certain decisions of Zimbabwe Cricket and also with the services of Coach Lalchand Rajput. But now, he has changed his mind on retirement. He is said to have informed his employers that he has decided to withdraw the retirement letter as reported by The Sunday News. He also put forward his commitment to see his central contract which has 10 months left. This round of events has brought Coach Lalchand Rajput under the scanner.
Zimbabwe’s performances haven’t been impressive lately
Rajput took the responsibility of being the coach of the Zimbabwe side two years ago. Since his appointment, a lot was expected from the Indian coach but things didn’t unveil in a very impressive manner. Since he took the charge of the team in the year 2018, Zimbabwe has won only four of the 29 ODIs they have played.
Whereas in the T20Is, the team has secured victory in only eight matches from the 29 they have played. The results are quite dismaying in the longest format as well as Zimbabwe have won only two of the 10 Test matches under Rajput’s stint. His contract as the team’s coach is set to end by in September this year and there have been talks that Zimbabwe should let him go post that.
As a part of the turnaround strategy, Zimbabwe are likely to make changes in their technical team as well as along with Rajput questions were raised on many others around him as well. Stuart Matsikenyeri, Douglas Hondo and Shepherd Makunura have also been placed under scrutiny. The national team is understood to have not benefitted much from them.
About the ongoing Zimbabwe-Ireland series, the visitors kicked start the series on a winning note by registering victory in the first T20I and taking an early lead in the series. however, in the second T20I, Ireland bounced back to level the series 1-1.
