The Indian selectors, sat with their laptops, notepads and pencils in New Delhi to talk, discuss and select the Indian ODI and T20I squad for the tour of Australia. Chairman of selectors Sandeep Patil had the limited overs skipper MS Dhoni and BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur for company along with his selection team.
Coming out of the meeting and after announcing the squad which included southpaw Yuvraj Singh and veteran left-arm pacer Ashish Nehra who hasn’t been a part of the team since he last played the World Cup semi-final match for India against Pakistan; both the players have been picked for the T20I series.
Mr. Patil while answering the reporters said, “This Australian tour will give selectors a chance, an opportunity to see the other players. We have not written any players off those who have not made it to these two teams. I won’t name a particular player but this tour is an opportunity and we want to make the best possible use of it.”
When asked about Yuvi’s selection he said, “Yuvraj Singh has been special, he will always remain special, the selectors are very happy the captain is very happy to have him back. We cannot promise any player whether he will be part of the next tour or till the world cup, we want every player to perform and every player has a chance to be selected in the team. “
How did Ashish Nehra’s name suddenly popup since he hasn’t been in the reckons for long. “Ashish Nehra is a consistent performer in the T20 format and we selectors feel that he will be useful in this format and this is the time to try him out rather than waiting till T20 World Cup we would like to see him, he has been discussed in the previous meetings also, we all felt this is the right time to see whether he can deliver the goods for the Indian team.” Patil said.
He further added that, they want to keep all the options in hand and not just go for a young team, but want to give the experienced guys a go as well. He said, “This game (T20s) is not only of the youngsters, this game also needs to have some experience and we are looking at the World T20 championship in India and we will need experience and as I said this is the time we can have a look at the seniors as well.”
Is this squad the one they are planning to field for the World T20 2016 in India? Sandeep Patil said, “I cannot confirm on behalf of my selection team that this is team for the T20 World Cup as well. “
