Ahead of the all-important World Cup, Pakistan spinner Shadab Khan had received a massive setback. He was ruled out of the upcoming T20I and ODI series against England in the lead-up to the World Cup after falling ill to a virus. The illness has also cast a shadow over his participation in the World Cup as the leg-spinner is in a race against time to be fit for the World Cup. Even if he recovers, he is unlikely to get any match to practise ahead of the mega-event.

For the series against England, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has replaced Shadab with veteran leg-spinner Yasir Shah. Shadab is also part of Pakistan’s World Cup squad. Should he not be fit for the showpiece event, the PCB can make changes to the squad without seeking ICC permission till May 23. In any case, Shadab is unlikely to recover in less than a month and the PCB has a major dilemma on deciding his fate.

Shadab had recently undergone treatment in London and has returned home for another round of blood tests in Lahore over the next few weeks. The tests are crucial in determining his fitness for the World Cup. According to media reports in Pakistan, PCB sources said the treatment usually lasts around three months. However, if Shadab does not experience any weakness then he can get the clearance to play in the World Cup. But in any case, he is required to continue taking medicines for at least three months.

Revealed the reason behind the viral sickness

According to the sources from Geo.tv, Shadab Khan had contracted hepatitis C. The news report further claimed that Shadab contracted the virus during a visit to a dentist. Shadab had reportedly complained of a tooth-related issue and paid a visit to a dentist in Rawalpindi, where he was attacked hepatitis C from contact with dental tools that had not been sterilised.

Before Pakistan team’s departure to England, the PCB doctors had sent the cricketers’ blood samples to a local hospital where it was revealed that the spinner’s sample tested positive for hepatitis C.
