Yesterday, the Kolkata Knight Riders managed to beat the Kings XI Punjab by seven wickets at the PCA Stadium in Mohali. With the victory, Kolkata also managed to keep their playoffs hopes alive in the 2019 edition of the Indian Premier League. Last night, it was Shubman Gill’s knock of 65* off 49 balls with five fours and a couple of sixes that helped the Knights cross the finishing line.
After getting picked by the Men in Gold and Purple last season, the Young Turk has come up the ranks. Most of the times he batted lower down the order and hence, got few chances to display his potential. However, he has also been entrusted to open the batting and the Fazilka-born has grabbed the opportunities with both hands with three half-centuries this season.
Gill holds his nerve under pressure
His first fifty came against the Delhi Capitals at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata and then the pugnacious potential racked up a 76 versus the Mumbai Indians at the same venue. As far as yesterday’s game was concerned, Shubman played it on his home ground. He opened the batting with Chris Lynn and put on an opening wicket stand of 62 in the mandatory powerplay.
KKR were chasing 184 runs and Gill didn’t show any signs of nervousness. The 19-year-old stayed unbeaten until the very end and guided his team through. The right-hander had more reasons to cheer as his father, Lakhwinder Singh was also present at the venue, cheering for his son.
Meanwhile, Shah Rukh Khan, the team’s owner was expectantly delighted. The veteran actor lauded Lynn and Sandeep Warrier, both of whom played a crucial role with 46 runs and two wickets respectively. Furthermore, Khan mentioned that the victory belonged to Shubman’s father.
He took to Twitter and wrote, “Well done @KKRiders & @DineshKarthik. All played like u should…by backing urselves. @lynny50 #SWarrier @RealShubmanGill good job. But tonite belongs to Papa! 3 cheers for proud papa & family.
