Shahbaz Nadeem eager to leave for Kolkata for his wife's liver treatment

The outbreak of coronavirus has compelled the world to come to a standstill. The pandemic has taken over 1 lakh lives around the globe and it has affected the daily lives of all individuals. Talking about India, the pandemic has taken lives of over 400 people in the country and more than 14,000 individuals have tested positive.

Amid this stern situation, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the extension of the lockdown upto May 3 in order to tackle the COVID-19. However, the lockdown has affected lakhs of people, who want to return back to their respective hometowns. Migrant workers and daily wage earners are facing a tough time amid the lockdown as they are short of ration and money.

The coronavirus outbreak has not spared the cricketing fraternity too as India international Shahbaz Nadeem is currently stuck at his in-laws’ place in Dhanbad. The left-arm spinner has been actively involved in helping the poor and the needy amid the crisis.

In such a difficult time, Nadeem has distributed essential commodities to around 350 families in the nearby slum. However, he is facing a tough time at the moment as he wants to leave for Kolkata to ensure a few medical tests of his wife.

Nadeem’s wife has a fatty liver and she has been undergoing its treatment since the past four-five months. The India international needs to be with her at the moment as she has been feeling weakness and nausea.

“She has fatty liver and is undergoing treatment for it for the past four-five months. She is taking medications as prescribed by the doctors but right now she is feeling weakness and nausea,” Nadeem told The New Indian Express.

“She needs to undergo a few tests including MRI. I have enquired here in Dhanbad but hospitals do not have facility for all these tests. I have spoken to a few of my acquaintances and sought their help. I will also try to speak to the West Bengal government seeking its help,” Nadeem added.

Nadeem took permission from the Dhanbad district administration and left for Kolkata a couple of days ago but was stopped at the Jharkhand-West Bengal border.

“He was not allowed to enter West Bengal. Cops heard Nadeem patiently but told him that they cannot let them go. He apprised them of the medical condition of his wife but they did not relent as they believed it was not an emergency case,” said SA Rahman, former secretary of the Dhanbad Cricket Association and Nadeem’s childhood coach.
